ZnO has a wide gap energy of 3.37eV and the high exciton binding energy of 60meV, which results in an efficient excitonic emission under low excitation intensity. UV stimulated emissions and lasing even at room temperature. Because of a high crystal perfectibility and a high specific surface area, ZnO whisker is expected to be used for electronic-optical devices and chemical sensors. Well-aligned ZnO whiskers were prepared by atmospheric metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique. The morphologies of the whiskers were studied by scanning electronic microscopy. Whiskers with wurtzite crystal structure grew along ZnO [0001] direction vertically on the glass substrate. The room temperature photoluminescence spectra of ZnO whiskers were investigated and a strong ultraviolet band emission with deep-level emission was observed in the PL spectra. The origin of the UV band from free exciton recombination was discussed.
