Microstructure Modification with Seed Crystal on the Surface Layer of Silicon Nitride Sintered Body

Surface layer of silicon nitride sintered body was modified using seed crystal of lod-like beta-silicon nitride. Different processes for surface modification were compared. In one process, tape-cast green sheet containing seed crystal was laid-up on the surface of CIPed green body; in another process, slurry containing seed crystal was dipped on CIPed green body. Relationship between content of seed crystal, microstructure of surface layer and mechanical properties of the sintered body will be discussed.
