The non-oxide porous ceramics, such as Si3N4, SiC and SiAlON, were promising candidates for hot gas filtration, due to their excellent mechanical properties, thermal resistance, thermochemical corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance. In this research, Porous Si3N4 ceramics with whisker-like pores were fabricated by slip casting technique, utilizing organic whisker as the fugitive particles. Consolidated samples were dried and the effects of the whisker contents on green densities, porosities and matrix porosities were investigated. Treated at 800°C, the samples were pressureless sintered at 1850°C in N2 atmosphere. The resultant samples have a uniform pore distribution, but the Si3N4 grain morphology of matrix was slightly varied with the whisker contents. The present Si3N4 ceramics with the whisker-like pores exhibited outstanding mechanical properties and permeability.
