Ba is incongruently dissolved from BaTiO3 in aqueous media due to its thermodynamic instability. Incongruent dissolution of Ba impacts the colloidal stability, microstructure, and electrical properties of BaTiO3 and related perovskite dielectric materials used in the manufacture of ceramic capacitors. Therefore, we have investigated the passivating behavior of three polymer additives (PAA, PVA, and carboxylated PVA), which contain the functional groups carboxyl, hydroxyl, or both. The functional group is in each case plays a central role in the adsorption of the polymer at the solid-liquid interface, so we expect the functional group to influence Ba dissolution. In this presentation, a correlation is made between the electrokinetic potential of BaTiO3, the adsorption behavior as it relates to the functional groups, and the dissolution behavior, in the presence of each polymer.
