Ion exchange treatments are used to strengthen glass, to control its strength distribution, and to produce controlled fragment sizes. The strength, central tension, surface compression, and fragmentation behavior have been measured for different glasses with a range of thicknesses. A model is presented that describes the relationship between surface compression and central tension and is compared to results for different exchanges. Strength determined in biaxial flexure tests and indentation measurements were used to determine the surface compression. The critical value of central tension for fragmentation and the relationship between tension and fragment size are compared and a simple model accounting for glass thickness is shown. The talk concludes with a discussion of approaches for tailoring the strength, reliability and fragmentation behavior of stressed glass.
