Chemical bonding state of sulfur in oxysulfide glasses and local structure were investigated and the role of sulfur in the glass is discussed.R2S(;R=Li,Na,K) forms stable glass with glass network former oxide by the conventional melt-quench method. These obtained glasses were colored and the remaining of sulfur was confirmed. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) was used to study chemical bonding state of anionic species such as sulfur and oxygen in oxysulfide glasses.S2p binding enrgy of the glass was observed approximately 161eV.This value is lower than that of orthorhombic crystalline sulfur and almost the same as the value of Na2S.From the result, it was found that the electron density of sulfur in glass was near to that of S2-.
