Active calcium oxide powder was prepared by thermal-decomposing calcium hydroxide powder in order to develop the effective removal agent for hydrogen chloride included in exhaust fumes from municipal incinerators. The removal properties of active calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide powders for hydrogen chloride gas were examined by column methods at 200 °C. Consequently, the remarkable difference of removal properties between active calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide was observed, although the difference of specific surface areas between them was small. Namely, the active calcium oxide powder was found to have superior removal characteristics for hydrogen chloride gas.
