Mullite-based iron and iron silicide nanocomposites were prepared by the reduction of mullite-iron oxide solid solution. The mullite-iron oxide solid solution was obtained by wet chemical method. XRD and TG-DTA were used to determine the phases and thermal evolution from gel to solid solution. It was found that the crystallization (800 degree C) of an Fe/Al spinel and the formation of mullite-iron oxide solid solution (1100 degree C) occurred successively. The mullite-based iron and iron silicide nanocomposites were gained by hydrogen reduction from 1000 degree C to 1500 degree C. Structural characterization by TEM revealed the mullite-based nanocomposites has intra-type structure of nanoparticles embedding in mullite grains.
