Silica gel with interconnected macropores was prepared by sol-gel process using SDS, instead of poly(acrylic acid) or poly(vinyl alcohol) used in the previous works, in order to induce phase separation in water glass system. At room temperature, silica gel with interconnected macroporous morphology was obtained from the system, but the macropores were large and filled with small particles. By increasing gelation temperature and adding ethanol to the silica sol, interconnected macroporous silica gel without particles could be prepared. Domain size of the interconnected structure was controlled by varying starting compositions, gelation temperature, and ethanol additive content.
