The river terraces along the Kiso River can be classified into the upper, middle and lower ones according to their relative altitudes and ages. Soils developed on each terraces in the environs of Minokamo Basin, were surveyed and classified into three genetic soil types as follows; 1) Yellow Brown Forest Soils: Developed on the lower and upper terraces, as well as on the hills composed of Plio-Pleistocene (?) Told Sand and Gravel Bed. 2) Relict Red Soils: Found on the hills composed of Miocene Nakamura Group and on flat surfaces of upper terraces. 3) Kuroboku Soils: Mainly developed on the middle terraces and nearly whole area is used as paddy fields. There are also found Surface-water Paddy Soils on the lower terraces, as well as Ground-water Paddy Soils in narrow valleys dissecting terraces and hills.
