Abstract

The purpose of this study is first, to determine the relationship of borderline, narcissistic, histrionic, dependent, and avoidant personality disorder attributes (PD attributes) with acquisitive self-monitoring (acquisitive SM) and defensive self-monitoring (defensive SM), and second, to examine the mediating effects of SM between the PD attributes and the instability of self-image. Undergraduate and graduate students (N=297) completed a questionnaire, the results of which showed that the histrionic PD attribute was positively and the dependent PD attribute negatively associated with acquisitive SM. Borderline, histrionic, and avoidant PD attributes were positively associated and the narcissistic PD attribute was negatively associated with defensive SM. Additionally, it was found that defensive SM mediated the relationship between the PD attributes and instability of self-image, suggesting that the instability of self-image was increased by external factors in individuals with histrionic and avoidant PD attributes.
