This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Dispositional Attitude Measure (DAM-J). The DAM-J is a measure of individuals’ dispositional attitudes used to evaluate their preferences for various attitude objects. This evaluation attitude can be observed by measuring individuals’ evaluations of various stimulus words. In the pilot study, we collected 129 stimulus words and chose 29 items by examining item score distributions and inter-item correlations. In the main study, we conducted a principal component analysis on DAM-J items using data from 445 Japanese undergraduates and confirmed the validity and reliability of the DAM-J. As a result, the DAM-J composed of 20 items was developed. This scale showed high reliability. Although the DAM-J showed inconsistent results with the original DAM in several variables, such as extraversion, most of them were interpretable. Moreover, for many variables, the DAM-J showed results consistent with those of previous studies (e.g., Diverse Curiosity, BIS/BAS). Therefore, we can conclude that the DAM-J has sufficient validity.
