This study examined the associations among the Big Five personality traits and Schwartz’s human values in Japan. A total of 345 adults completed online measures of these traits and values. As hypothesized, Agreeableness was positively associated with self-transcendence and negatively associated with self-enhancement, whereas Openness was positively associated with openness to change and negatively associated with conservation. By contrast, the associations for Extraversion and Conscientiousness diverged from prior findings. Overall, the study demonstrated robust associations between Schwartz’s human values and Openness and Agreeableness. This supported the criterion validity of the Japanese version of the value scales.
