HD Photo (previously known as Windows Media Photo) is a new ffle format for end-to-end digital imaging, supported in the Windows operating system, and freely available for implementation on devices and other platforms. HD Photo provides support for a wide variety of image formats including integer or floating point pixels values up to 32-bits per channel, RGB, gray scale, CMYK and n-channel, and interleaved or planar alpha channels. HD Photo offers advanced region and progressive frequency decoding as well as a number of compressed domain operations. HD Photo's high-performance, low-footprint compression algorithm offers either mathematically lossless compression or lossy compression that is twice as efffcient as JPEG. This article provides an overview of the features and capabilities of this new still image format, with references to additional information and resources.
