Abstract
We studied the relationship between gastric acid secretion and serum group I pepsinogen (PGI) before and after subcutaneous injection of Histalog and insulin hypoglycemia stimulation in intractable peptic ulcer patients. The mean serum PGI levels in 9 gastric ulcer and 12 duodenal ulcer patients were 60.9±19.8ng/ml and 84.1±22.5ng/ml, respectively with the latter value being significantly higher than the former. Serum PGI after stimulation with Histalog and insulin hypoglycemia stimulation in hypersecretors was significantly higher than that of normosecretors. A significant relationship exists between PAO or.MAO and serum PGI after stimulation with Histalog. A statistically significant correlation was found between MAC, PAO or IAO and serum PGI after insulin hypoglycemia stimulation. This suggests that serum PGI must be mediated by the vagal nerves.
