Abstract
The recently-developed balanced electrolyte solution, containing polyethylene glycol and sodium sulfate, has minimal absorption and secretion of water and electrolytes in the intestinal tract, when taken orally. On fourty patients who underwent total colonoscopy, we performed whole-gut lavage using this solution for the preparation, and prospectively evaluated its effectiveness, patients' acceptance and safety. Preparation was good to excellent in quality. The lavage method was preferred by the patients to the conventional method. No adverse effect was noted. We conclude that wholegut lavage with nonabsorbable, nonsecretory balanced electrolyte solution is a valuable method in the preparation for colonoscopy.
