Comparing with product based value chain, service value chain or network is quite different. Some level of service, such as maintenance service for products, could be delivered using the as-is product based value chain. In the situation, research could contribute to business as the same way, when companies deliver products as well as services around products. In this paper, we discuss the difference between product based value chain and service value chain, after defining them. Then we describe research organization value in each value chain. There needs some transformation of research organization to contribute in service value chain, and share case study to try those transformation.
