The 21st century is said to be the century of ocean, and researches (for example, those on energy, biology, environment, and so on) have been carried out by many countries for a long time. Throughout these researches, there left many valuable documents such as observational data, experimental results, papers, and patents as well. However, documents from different institutions are usually different from each other both in the format and in different teleological and taxonomical viewpoints. Ontology can be used as a middleware to facilitate data sharing and cooperation among these institutions. In this paper, we show a prototype ontology of ocean mainly focusing on its ecology and sustainability, and some possible applications based on the ontology are also proposed.
