The notions of “frame problem” and “situated cognition”

Abstract

The notion of “situated cognition” appeared in the middle 80’s as an antithesis against “information processing model” that had been the basis of artificial intelligence and cognitive science. It is until one is embedded in a certain situation and behaves actually there that one is able to attend to so-far unheeded aspects of the world and thereby one’s cognition, e.g. thoughts, perception, and actions, develops. The notion of “frame problem”, on the other hand, has been a hard problem for computational systems, one that what is relevant and what is not are not predictable in advance. Both notions are two sides of the same coin. The argument of these brings significant implications for AI researches hereafter.
