Preliminary Study on Understanding Exploration Toward Visualization Based on Visualization Cube

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze user interaction for generating visualization on the basis of the visualization cube. The visualization cube has been proposed to model user interaction for spatiotemporal trend information. While it has been used for designing visual analytics tools, it is expected to be also useful for the externalization of users' mental model and the analysis of user interaction during exploration. A visual analytics tool based on the visualization cube is developed with Vega-lite, using which a user experiment is conducted. This paper reports the results of analyzing the obtained interaction log, such as the effect of showing the image of visualization cube on user interaction. This paper also discusses the possibility of using the interaction log for storytelling.
