This presentation aims to examine the ideal relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and humans through the lens of mediation theory, as developed by Peter-Paul Verbeek, a scholar in technological ethics. From his perspective, humans can cultivate a desirable life alongside AI by considering how AI influences them, envisioning the kind of person they aspire to be in coexistence with AI, and utilizing AI as a tool for self-realization. AI should not hinder these human endeavors; rather, it is encouraged to support and enhance them. One of the strengths of Verbeek’s approach is its ability to effectively describe how humans achieve self-realization through interactions with AI. However, his approach lacks a normative analysis of the good/bad concerning the very self-realization. Addressing this limitation is essential in fostering better relationships between humans and their environment.
