How Do People Change When They Know Their Behavior Will Be Learned by AI?

An Experimental Study on Changes in Prosociality

Abstract

In the near future, it is expected that AI will replace the majority of human social decision-making. AI learns by utilizing data such as humans' past behavioral records. In this context, does notifying individuals that their behavior is being used for AI learning lead to changes in their behavior? The causal relationship between "awareness of AI learning" and prosociality has not yet been proven, leaving room for further research. To examine whether AI learning promotes human prosociality, we conducted a face-to-face experiment using the dictator game based on Klockman et al. (2022), with an experimental group notified of AI learning and a control group that was not notified. This paper provides insights into predicting behavioral changes in humans as AI becomes increasingly widespread in society.
