During the 15 years from 1986 to 2000 the Department of Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Ishikawa Prefectural Central Hospital treated 23 pediatric patients younger than 15 years old for jaw fractures. We performed open reduction and internal fixation on eight of these patients (five males and three females). The number of fractures is decreasing year by year. Male patients over the age of ten were in the majority. The main causes of fracture were traffic accidents, sports accidents, falls and violence. The locations of the fractures were mandibular body, angle and/or symphysis in all cases. Five cases were on one side and three cases were on both sides. The total number of fracture lines was 11. Titanium miniplate fixation was conducted for fixation of the fracture in all cases. In six out of eight cases maxillomandibular fixation was combined with miniplate fixation. Fixation was conducted for one to two weeks. Fixing pins were removed four to eight months after operation in all cases. No tooth follicle damage, tooth deformation, tooth eruption, dysfunction of occluding relation or facial deformation was observed during the follow-up period in any of the cases.
