Equation of state for solid has been discussed and it has beenfound that the change in the frequency ν of atomic vibration, estimated by Mott's formula, must be attributed to some structural change on melting. A theory of fusion has been put forth assuming the dependence of ν upon the degree of order. The theory is analogous to the theory of strictly regular solutions rather than to the usual theory of disorder
