Action research for cultivating civic pride in regional education of elementary school

Abstract
Recently concerning with the regional revitalization and the local problem solution, “civic pride”, which was born in the United Kingdom in the 18th century, attracts attention on the sight of public space design and community development. Referring to practice of domestic and foreign variety of social studies education, our group research the significance and education method for cultivating the civic pride for applying new style regional education of elementary school. The Civic pride is defined as self-confidence and attachment for the hometown, and positive mindset for participation the improvement it. In this research, the role of the regional education program based on the town watching in the elementary school was observed as an action research, and its mechanism is clarified. Specifically, in the periods for social studies education and integrated study of the Hiyoshi-higashi elementary school’s fourth grader in Kumamoto City, the series of program such as the town exploration, map for town watching and exchange meeting, are practiced and inspected about education method and materials. As a result, the process, which students obtain the local identity as his own, and they cooperated for making the story about it by the workshop method was revealed. And, it is clarified that the process which students understand about local identity and the membership in the community is important for cultivating the civic pride.
