Single crystals of carbonate apatite were grown using CaCO3-Ca(OH)2 flux under Ar gas pressure of 50MPa. The crystals obtained were hexagonal prismatic and elongated along the c-axis. They were over 5mm in length and about 0.5mm in diameter. CO3 ions in planar triangle form replaced both OH sites (A-sites) and PO4 sites (B-sites) in the hydroxyapatite (HAp) structure. The OH/CO3 ratio in the A-site could be controlled by controlling Ca(OH)2 content in the flux. The A-sites were perfectly substituted by CO3 ions using no Ca(OH)2.
