A modified sol-gel method using propylene oxide as a gelation reagent was applied to preparation of iron phosphate. It was found that the gelatination reaction proceed in non-aqueous solutions. When a mixture of ethanol and toluene was used as a solvent, very fine particles of gel(0.1-0.2μm) were obtained. Surface area and pore distribution of the gel were considerably affected by the solvents used. Crystallization of the gel was induced by heating at above 600°C. The crystal structure changed with heating conditions. Crystalline quartz form FePO4 was formed only by heating in air. No peaks due to the quartz form FePO4 were observed in XRD patterns of the samples heated in vacuo.
