Eleven reaction stages are involved in bonding of living tissues to bioactive glasses; stage 4 is adsorption of Ca and P ions from solution, stage 5 is crystallization of hydroxy carbonate apatite. Molecular orbital models of H3PO4 hydrogen bonding shows that the AM-1 method matches experimental heats of formation.
