Key concepts comprising future environmental studies for Asia may be “Asian model of sustainable development”, “new civilization to be established in the next century, ” and “strategic researches based on innovative policy thinking.” We should examine and propose new development patterns, which produce less environmental burdens, e. g., less emissions of CO2 and environmental pollutants, and achieve higher welfare by adopting innovative technologies such as new systems of info-communication, renewable resources, recycling of materials and biotechnology. Such new development patterns would be based on socioeconomic systems combined with new technologies. Here, we may expect that the traditional centralized large-scale technologies will be replaced by new smaller-scale technologies which are more decentralized. Industrialized nations like Japan should establish a model of such new development patterns, while developing economies in Asia could leap forward to the new model, not following the old development patterns of the industrialized nations.
