Abstract
In Japan, the economic appraisal of river works is made by the Outline of Economic Investigation of Flood Prevention. The Outline cannot make appraisal of water use and river environment. Since the River Act was made an amendment, the creation and conservation have been added to its purpose, and they have been made ruled that the river administrator must hear the opinions of concerned residents to the plan of river improvement, which is temporary then, before the plan is decided. It is necessary to build the comprehensive method of economic appraisal of river works, of course including the evaluation of water use and river environment. Then we make a study on application of Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to the river works, which have the purpose of flood prevention and environment improvement. In the near future we must dissolve the problems of application of CVM to river works through the systematic studies.
