For a island-short nation like Japan, it is imperative to make use of coastal areas. But usable space is limited, necessitating coastal utilization to be pursued depending on the characteristics of each adjacent sea area, to meet the growing space demand.
This paper deals with present development and utilization of artificial islands in Japan, which have been developed and planned to make effective use of coastal area. Keywords: artificial island
