Abstract
An analytical model of three dimensional cutting process with two cutting edges is presented without relying on empirical rules in the present research. The shear deformation zone is simplified to a thin shear plane, and Krystof′s maximum shear stress model and Merchant′s minimum energy model for the orthogonal cutting process are extended to the three dimensional cutting process to predict the shear direction. The three dimensional cutting parameters including cutting forces and chip flow direction are computed with the developed model, and it is confirmed that the computed chip flow direction agrees roughly with Colwell′s empirical law of chip flow.
