Abstract
In order to suppress the chattering of boring bars, a cantilever-type dynamic damper composed of a metal plate, a metal sleeve and a rubber ball was developed. When the dynamic damper was attached to a boring bar, the chattering of the boring bar was suppressed substantially and the damping ratio of the boring bar with the damper was about 15 times as much as that without the damper. The damping properties of the dynamic damper obtained experimentally were qualitatively agreed with those obtained by an analytical model.
