Abstract
To know the tangency condition of the real contact area is an very important factor to the analysis of friction, wear-out, and lubrication, etc. In this study, the rough surface is touched to the sapphire prism, light is entered for total reflection in the contact part, and the reflected figure is observed. It was tried to detect the real contact area from the observation image by using image processing method. Concretely, the differentiation filter and the Fourier transform are used to the observed image. From the image, the edge is detected, and the part enclosed by the edge is judged to be a real contact area. As a result, smaller contact point can be detected as a contact part, and the real contact area was able to measure more accurately.
