Abstract

The flow characteristics of sludge containing in the water-soluble coolants, which were sampled from the in-service machining center using for cutting of stainless-steel, cast iron and aluminum alloy, were experimentally examined. The sludge from the cutting of stainless-steel and cast iron showed a good sedimentary or floatability while the sludge from the cutting of aluminum had poor sedimentary and floatability. This means that most of the sludge from the cutting of stainless-steel and cast iron could be separated by using sedimentation or floating device but it is not easy to collect the sludge from the cutting of aluminum. A lot of short hair-like chip with 10 to 20 μm of diameter were also found in the water-soluble coolant independent of the work material variety. These fine chips can be collected on the surface of unique separation unit developed by author.
