The purpose of this paper is to investigate the thought processes of the subjects in the four-card problem from a logical point of view. Consider the following argument: If Mr. Smith regards the four-card problem as trivial, then he does not apply logical standards in order to subject his inferences to critical analysis. Mr. Smith regards the four-card problem as trivial. Therefore, Mr. Smith does not apply logical standards in order to subject his inferences to critical analysis. This argument is obviously valid. It has valid form of deductive argument. Then, what can we say about the validity of the actual thought processes of Mr. Smith? It should be noted that we cannot determine whether people's actual thought processes are logically correct or fallacious.
