Some experiments upon coating materials were made to improve usability characteristics of an ilmenite type slag shielded electrode having excellent mechanical strengths. The test results showed that for obtaining high usability in vertical and upward welding, adequate viscosity of slag and good evolution of gases from fluxes should be maintained and at the same time conditions of satisfactory downward welding operations should be secured. Further considerations were made as to the factors determining the states of slags and are phenomena.
