Abstract

Recently, the decline of city center shopping areas has become serious problem in many local cities partly due to large shopping centers in suburban areas. On the other hand, there are the cases that commercial facilities are developed in the stations ("Ekibiru" or "Ekinaka") in central part of cities. This paper aims to discuss the process, effectiveness and challenges of cooperation between local shopping streets and a station building for city center revitalization through the case study of Oita City. In Oita City, various cooperative activities are carried out based on the cooperation between existing shopping streets and the station building (JR OITA CITY). The distance between the station and local shopping area, the existence of an association for machidukuri, consciousness of actors and complementary relations are key factors to build close cooperation.
