Abstract

The art-based community development project has been progressed nationwide since 1990s. The attempt to develop community have been made with the use of various social art festivals such as Daichi Art Festival in Niigata, Setouchi International Art Festival, Nara Machiya Art Festival, etc. We will look at the case of Nara and analyze the present condition of the art festival and its outcome in order to consider how the utilization plan ought to be and the future prospects of utilization of private space in Machiya. This paper, we will overview the current practice cases of utilization of Nara Machiya. Second, we will present a brief description of the current state of the Machiya utilization plan designed by Nara prefecture. Third, the other practice cases of community development will be analyzed. Finally, we will propose the way planning of the utilization of Machiya for the community development ought to be in the future.
