Abstract

In recent years, as more people recognize the importance of preserving townscape particularly a traditional main street
with historical characteristics, the movement of historic main street preservation has gained a momentum throughout the
nation. However, only a handful of those have been preserved and dozens of others are disappearing by multiple factors.
Yokosuka-kaido district, which is located in Osuka region of KakegawaCity, is one of successful cases of historic
preservation and its preservation effort is achieved by two reasons: great respect of deity and the city planning process by local residence. In reality, however, the component of the main street in this district is slowly diminished. This paper reveals the relationship between townscape of Yokosuka-kaido and festivals, examines townscape preservation and city planning process by local residence, and considers appropriate approaches to deal with historic main street preservation.
