Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clarify the factor related to exercise adherence of middle and high aged people who belonged to a privately owned fitness club. Questionnaires containing thirty-one statements of exercise adherence were administered to 115 members of a privately owned fitness club in Osaka, Japan. Factor analysis was used to identify the structure of subjects' exercise adherence in this study. Factor scores were then compared for differences in gender and sport participation status. Sports participation status in this study was regulated according to a frequency of sports activity and transtheoretical model, ‘Preparation’, ‘Action’ and ‘Maintenance’. The findings of this study were as follows: 1) Six factors related to exercise adherence existed. They were named ‘Social influence’, ‘Effect of exercise’, ‘Equipments and facilities’, ‘Exercise skill’, ‘Club location’ and ‘Self-efficacy’ factors. 2) Compared with male participants, female participants attached importance to ‘Social influence’, ‘Effect of exercise’ and ‘Self-efficacy’ factors. On the other hand, male participants were interested in ‘Exercise skill’. 3) Participants in ‘Preparation’ were tended to be affected by ‘Club location’ and ‘Equipments and facilities’, and those who in ‘Action’ attached importance to ‘Effect of exercise’ and ‘Club location’. Moreover, participants in ‘Maintenance’ were not much interested in all factors, but they attached importance to ‘Social influence’.
