Pollution of the water of Lake Suwa owing to alkylbenzenesulphonate (ABS) from the municipal waste waters was investigated in the summer of 1967 (June 8 and July 30). The results of the analysis of ABS according to the methylene blue method were determined as methylene blue active substances (MBAS), in this study.
). As shown in fig. 1 and fig. 2 the content of MBAS was high in the northern half of the lake, especially along the coast of Suwa and Okaya, where inflows of waters highly polluted with ABS were found.
). The contents of MBAS and COD showed no significant relationship, the high value of COD in the surface water of the lake is considered to be caused from the decomposition of planktons blooming at that time.
). From the calculations of the budget of MBAS in this lake, it is concluded that considerable amounts of ABS must have been adsorbed and deposited on the bottom mud of the lake.
). Accompanying to ABS, 515 tons of phosphate-P, which was contained in the detergent as a component of builder, was estimated to have been supplied into the lake every year. The inflow of such amount of phosphate plays an important role in the progressing eutrophication of this lake.
