Abstract
We have experienced two cases of small thyroid carcinoma infiltrated into extrathyroid tissues. Case 1 was a 41-year-old female. She was detected to have a thyroid nodule, 8 mm in size, incidentally by thyroid echography. She was diagnosed as having a thyroid carcinoma by echo-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy. Thyroid nodule was nonpalpable. Right lobectomy with isthmus was carried out. Intraoperatively, tumor residue of the tracheal wall was detected, and partial resection of 2 tracheal rings without tracheal mucosa was carried out. Histopathologically, the thyroid tumor was papillary carcinoma and tumor nests were within the tracheal wall. Case 2 was a 46-year-old female. She was detected to have thyroid nodules in the bilateral lobes, incidentally by thyroid echography. Echo-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (left lobe), 3 years later, resulted in class III. Thyroid nodule 1 cm in size was palpable. Left lobectomy and enucleation of the right thyroid nodule were carried out. Histopathologically the thyroid tumor was sclerosing carcinoma and infiltrated into extrathyroid fatty tissues.
