Hematological and endocrinological investigations were made on nine cases of primary hypothyroidism associated with anemia.
The anemia and endocrine insufficiency of a case with macrocytic normochromic anemia associated with insufficiency of adenohyophysis, adrenocortical and gonadal organs were completely corrected by treatment with thyroxine and hydrocortisone. Of other eight cases with normocytic normochromic anemia, six cases were suggested to be associated with adrenocortical insufficiency.
From these results, macrocytic or normocytic anemias in primary hypothyroidism were considered to be not merely due to thyroid hormone deficiency, but also to the deficiency of pituitary, adrenocortical and gonadal hormones.
