Abundant supply of nutrient salts from the waters in the rivers and lakes and marshes leads to abnormal increase in the growth of blue-green algae in summer that thrives under such nutritional environment, thereby resulting to the deterioration of water quality and posing problems to our social life. This paper reports the results of the study on the improvement of and effective use of bottom mud rich in nutritive salts that is mainly responsible for the deterioration of water quality and contamination of water bed sediments. In particular, this paper reports the clear indication of an increase in the strength of the beneficiated soil simultaneous to the reduction in the speed of elution of nutritive salts resulting from the application of highly water absorbent beneficiation materials to the water bed sediments at Lake Suwa, Lake Biwa. This paper further introduces actual examples of the effective use of the beneficiated soil as base material for schoolyards, grounds, crop fields, lake front formation and cultivation of reeds.
