Projects aiming to restore the riverbeds with gravel and sandy structures have been increasing after the pass of Law for the Promotion of Nature Restoration in Japan. However, maintenance of gravel and sandy bar·can be difficult because of exotic plants. Therefore, it is important to know how germination and growth characteristics of river plants have been affected by differences of gravel and sandy structures. The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of the growth of river plants caused by the structures. As a result of filed surveys and experiments, we have shown that the plants can hardly grow when the total thickness of gravels is over 8cm. However, even thin gravel layers can keep moisture beneath them and help plants survive the dry conditions.
