Comprehensive sediment management in reservoirs is required to preserve the capabilities of water resources facilities and to conserve the environment in rivers and coastal areas downstream of the reservoir. As one means of achieving goals, ’sediment replenishment’ has been carried out in more than 20 dams to excavate some of the sediment deposited in reservoirs, transport it to downstream of the dam, discharge it into downstream rivers with flood water.
Environmental Hydraulics group in the committee on hydroscience and hydraulic engineering, JSCE has organized the symposium on the sediment replenishment, and this paper summarize current status and future challenges of the method based on the discussion at the symposium.
