Tsurumi River Basin was rapidly urbanized since 1950, resulting in increased water-related disasters due to reduced flood-water retention capacity. In order to increase flood conveying capacity within the channel, large-scale dredging works of the riverbed has been implemented in 1970s to 1980s within a short period. This has led to homogeneous channels and the environment that is not adjustable for aquatic communities to sustain their lives. Firstly, this study identified impact of the large-scale dredging on the environment of the river. Secondly, physical parameters of sustaining ecological functions were analyzed. Thirdly, “River Environmental Management Sheet” was adopted in order to promote ecological restoration of rivers.
