Abstract
There have been few studies that have explored how the practice of learning about disaster risk reduction (DRR) affects children’s perceptions of the Corona disaster. In this study, with the cooperation of a public elementary school that has been implementing a DRR learning project for many years, we analyzed what kind of change in awareness was observed in the year 2020 among upper grade students. As a result of three methods of analysis: interviews, questionnaire surveys, and content analysis, we found that the closure of school during the first phase of the Corona disaster reduced the level of interest in DRR among many children, but that it quickly recovered when DRR practices resumed. While many children were afraid of the Corona disaster, many believed that they would be able to overcome the difficulties, but this tendency was not related to their level of interest in DRR or their level of commitment.
