La place des maîtres indigènes dans l'école coloniale n'a pas toujours été appréhendée à sa juste mesure. Un parcours de la littérature scientifique sur l'école coloniale, ainsi que l'interrogation d'un certain nombre de sources d'époque, permettent de mieux mesurer, de la fin du XIXe siècle au début de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, l'importance d'un personnel d'enseignement dont l'influence dans le devenir de l'école dans les différents territoires est bien plus importante qu'on ne le croit.
The place of indigenous teachers in the colonial school has not always been fully understood. A survey of the scientific literature on the colonial school, as well as the interrogation of a certain number of period sources, allows us to better measure, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the Second World War, the importance of a teaching staff whose influence in the future of the school in the various territories is much more important than one might expect.
